Revealed: Instagram’s most influential fashion brands of 2022

by uma

  • Chanel is Instagram’s most influential fashion brand in 2022, with a huge 45 million tagged photos on Instagram and 219k monthly searches.

Fashion experts at Larizia have looked at social media, Google searches and trend data to highlight which brands have made the biggest impression this year. When looking at increased interest, Stella McCartney shows the biggest growth – the fashion powerhouse has seen a 45% increase in searches from 2021 to 2022.

Instagram’s top 10 most influential fashion brands are:

  1. Chanel – 45.6m

With over 45 million hashtags Chanel takes the top spot for Instagram’s most influential brand and the ‘it’ designer of 2022. The brand can thank celebrity endorsements for much of their popularity: Chanel saw a spike in interest in May this year, just after they launched their Spring 2022 campaign featuring Lily-Rose Depp.

  1. Gucci – 45.1m

While just missing out on the top spot, Gucci came in a close second on the list with an impressive 45 million tagged posts on Instagram. The brand was also the second most searched for of 2022, with 370k searches each month. It seems the big screen may have impacted the brand’s iconic status – interest in Gucci increased following the release of ‘House of Gucci’ and reached a high in February this year when the film was snubbed for an Oscar.

  1. Dior – 32.3m

With over 32 million hashtags, Dior can be found all over Instagram. The luxury brand is searched for on Google 247k times every month, and the fashion house is consistently hailed as one of the biggest and best around. Pop culture has also played a role – interest in Dior reached a high in February 2022 when a new TV show about the fashion family was announced.

  1. Louis Vuitton – 25.2m

Coming in with over 25 million tagged posts on Instagram, Louis Vuitton has more than earned its place as one of the most influential brands. Louis Vuitton is also searched for a huge 638k times every month, making it the most Googled brand on the list. The brand is a clear example of how celebrity endorsements can increase brand popularity; interest spiked in July this year when the AW22 campaign featuring NIGO, Yussef Dayes, Yasiin Bey, and Solange Knowles was released.

  1. Prada – 23.7m

Prada currently has almost 24 million tagged photos on Instagram and 122k searches each month, giving the brand a huge and highly influential reach. Interest in the brand sky-rocketed in May 2022, when model and actor Hunter Schafer became the new face of Prada and launched her iconic handbag campaign.

  1. Balenciaga – 19.9m

Balenciaga has enjoyed many viral moments this year following a partnership with fashion icon Kim Kardashian, with searches for the brand spiking each time Kim steps out in a Balenciaga look. 2022 searches peaked after the star showcased a full Balenciaga outfit, including a faux fur hooded coat, the day after the Met Gala. With almost 20 million hashtags and 287k searches a month, it’s clear this brand continues to make a bold impression in 2022.

  1. Fendi – 17.8m

Italian luxury fashion house Fendi were next on the list. Their 17.8 million tagged photos and 80k searches helped propel their position as one of the most influential brands online and on social media. While interest in the famous brand remains consistent, searches saw the biggest increase following their January men’s show.

  1. Valentino – 15m

Valentino is huge across Instagram, with 15 million tagged posts. Valentino has also seen a 10% surge in interest when looking at searches, with 86k people a month looking up the brand. The biggest spike in interest was seen after Valentino’s famous AW22 runway show, which highlighted age diversity and boldly launched an entirely pink collection.

  1. Burberry – 14.5m

The Burberry brand is visually iconic, with the signature print instantly recognisable – so it’s no surprise the brand is spotted regularly by those scrolling Instagram. With almost 15 million tagged posts on Instagram and 174k searches each month, this British brand has established its place as one to be seen in this year.

  1. Versace – 13.8m

The final spot on the influential brand list is taken by a true fashion icon – Versace. The brand has been tagged almost 14 million times on Instagram, showing just how many people own (or covet) their designs. The brand has also increased in searches in 2022, with 104k people looking up the brand each month compared to 102k in 2021. The brand’s biggest increase in interest happened in May this year – directly after Gigi Hadid graced the Met Gala red carpet in an all-red, iconic Versace look.

As well as the top Instagram fashion brands, Larizia also looked into which brands have had the biggest increase in search interest this year. The five fashion brands experiencing the biggest growth in popularity in 2022 are:

  1. Stella McCartney – 45% increase
  2. Marc Jacobs – 17% increase
  3. Vivienne Westwood –16% increase
  4. Michael Kors – 13% increase
  5. Valentino – 10% increase

Claire Breslin at Larizia, commented:

“We’re fascinated by luxury brands and the trends we see both online and in the wider press. It’s clear these iconic brands have a huge influence over not only the fashion world, but on social media too. While Chanel, Gucci and Dior have solidified their place as the leaders of the pack when it comes to the ‘it’ brands of the year, it’s also interesting to see brands such as Balenciaga and Versace soaring in popularity due to celebrity endorsements. One thing’s for sure – these brands are driving forces in fashion, and ones to always keep an eye on in the luxury market.”
