Taking a look at the most searched terms and photos saved by Australian users between January – June 2021, Editor Vanessa Walker reveals what’s trending in some of the most popular rooms on Houzz across the country.

Over the last year, the heart of the home has evolved into more than just a cooking space, shifting into a multi-functional zone that now all at once, needs to cater as a place for dining, entertaining and working. We can see this priority takes place in the Houzz community’s most saved kitchens between Jan-Jun 2021, as these spaces invite us in with flexible layouts and seating at marble-ous island benchtops to graze, gather, and more. According to this year’s top 20 search terms on Houzz, the style homeowners and designers are loving is a ‘Hamptons’ inspired kitchen, alongside ideas on ‘outdoor kitchens’, ‘butler pantry’ and ‘splashbacks’. 

  1. Soothing bathrooms 

Once a clinical space devoid of emotion, bathrooms have transformed into retreats from the hustle-and-bustle of family and work life at home. The most saved bathrooms by the Houzz community between Jan-Jun 2021 truly take relaxation to a whole new level, embracing pops of pastel, floating vanities and curves in all the right places. Professionals on Houzz say homeowners are increasingly seeking bathrooms that ooze hotel-spa luxury and confirmed by terms like ‘ensuite’ and ‘powder room’ joining the top 30 search trends on the platform, as they explore ways to enjoy a touch of grandeur at home.

At the start of 2021, homeowners set their eyes on creating more usable space within the home as demand for professionals on Houzz increased by 79% compared to the same period in 2020. and detailed high-end finishes. Within the category, the search term ‘small laundry room solutions’ joined the top 25 search terms on Houzz, as homeowners increasingly looked for ways to cleverly freshen up space.

With WFH the new norm for many Aussie households, it’s no surprise the ‘home office’ ranks amongst the top 10 search terms on Houzz between Jan-Jun 2021. Looking at the most saved home offices on Houzz so far this year, homeowners made use of a spare room or enlisted the help of professionals to reimagine previous small nooks and corners in their homes to create the ultimate work set up. A productive space with a built-in timber desktop, v-groove panelling and greenery in Geelong VIC took the title as most saved home office by the Houzz community for 2021.

Homeowners are dreaming about the ‘master bedroom’, as ranked in the top 10 search terms on Houzz between Jan-Jun 2021. Tucking into the top three bedrooms saved on Houzz this year, homeowners and designers add character and comfort with soft textured furnishings in these brightly lit spaces. The Houzz community favourite with the most saves in the category is a master bedroom with a circular framed window opening up to a backyard in Russell Lea NSW.

From ocean views to tropical-style interiors, a better connection to the outdoors is a key trend we’re seeing homeowners and designers implement in some of the most favourite living rooms on Houzz this year.
