The Digital Transformation: AI and AR Emerges as the Must-Have Tool in Beauty Retail

This year’s “Beauty by Numbers” insights bring to the forefront the digital transformation taking place across the beauty industry, where consumers are turning to AI and AR-powered digital tools and virtual try-on experiences more than ever before. This year, consumers continued to turn to digital experiences for beauty advice and product inspiration, with billions of virtual product try-ons observed across the YouCam apps community. The trends and behaviours highlighted in this year’s recap spotlight the growing demand for AI and AR-powered virtual try-on experiences as means for beauty brands to enhance their digital experiences and product offerings. This demand for consumption of digital goods is expected to grow further in 2022 and beyond as consumers enter the Metaverse and Web 3.0 becomes a reality, and the adoption of virtual try-ons and AR experiences accelerates. Having analysed the 2021 consumer big data analytics collected from the YouCam Apps, these are the biggest beauty trends and consumer behaviours of the year:

∙       Demand for Personalized Skincare. Personalized consumer shopping experiences and tailored product recommendations have become essential across beauty shopping, as consumers seek out specific recommendations customized to their unique needs. This was evidenced by YouCam’s personalized Skin Score Tool being used more than 40 million times this year.

∙       Eyes on the Rise. For the second year in a row, eye makeup was the most tried-on product category with over 3.7 billion virtual try-ons.

∙       Lip Love. Lip color virtual try-ons are on the rise, after a decline in lipstick try-ons throughout 2020 as consumers wore face masks and opted for low maintenance beauty routines during the pandemic. This year, lip color try-ons climbed to more than 2.5 billion in YouCam apps. Furthermore, consumer data analytics indicate that lip gloss and lip colors with high shine finishes have been gaining in popularity are popular choices as we move into 2022.

∙       A New Texture in Town. While previously matte lip color finishes have occupied the most popular spot, we have now seen a surge in demand for sheer lipstick finishes. This year, sheer lipsticks surpassed matte lipsticks as the top lip color texture in most regions.
