The luxurious Caribbean island offers plenty for avid adventurers
For those with a yearning for adventure, the Caribbean island of Nevis offers a plethora of thrilling activities to experience.
Despite the island only measuring 92 square kilometres, there are so many ways this small but mighty island ticks the boxes when it comes to elevating the heart rate and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. From hiking the breath-taking Nevis Peak, to trekking across the island’s stunning golden-sand beaches on horseback or even taking part in the cross channel swim, between Nevis and St Kitts, there’s something in Nevis that will be sure to satisfy any adventurous appetite.
Devon Liburd, CEO of the Nevis Tourism Authority, says: “Nevis offers a unique and authentic combination of experiences that are unlike anywhere else in the world. From adrenaline fuelled hikes to underwater experiences that will see you catching glimpses of some of the Caribbean’s most exotic marine life, Nevisians are incredibly proud of all our island has to offer when it comes to adventure. We may be one of the smallest islands in the Caribbean, but our adventure offering really packs a punch.”
Having grown up in Nevis, Devon is no stranger to the island’s top adventurous activities, and here are his top recommendations…
Hike the Nevis Peak
Nevis is famed for its iconic peak, and the stunning 3,232ft volcano rising from the centre of the island is the first thing that visitors notice when arriving in Nevis. For those brave enough to climb it, the peak makes for an adrenaline-fuelled challenge to the top. You’ll find yourself clambering between rocks and rainforest, but once you’ve reached the summit – you certainly won’t regret it. Expect stunning 360 views out on to the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, stretching all the way to neighbouring islands.
Devon Liburd says: “We always recommend hiking the Nevis Peak alongside an experienced guide, as the terrain can be very challenging in some areas. We also advise being well prepared for the hike, with suitable footwear, plenty of high energy snacks, water, and sunscreen.”
Join a 4×4 quad bike tour of the island
For the real thrill seekers amongst us, taking to the island by 4×4 is a sure-fire way to get your blood pumping. It’s also a fantastic way to see parts of the island otherwise unexplored by foot or by car. With a mix of on and off-road itineraries, you can opt for a challenging ride up through the island’s hills and along rocky terrain, with an incredible view from Saddle Hill at the top. Alternatively, choose a guided Nevis history tour by quad bike for a leisurely option.
Explore Nevis’ underwater world
If you prefer your adventures to be of the underwater kind, then snorkelling or scuba diving in Nevis is an absolute must. To make the most of your experience, joining a boat tour is essential – your expert skipper will take you to the best spots around Nevis and nearby island St. Kitts. Expect crystal clear waters and a whole host of different tropical fish, sea plants and corals.
“Sea turtles are very common in the Nevisian waters, so keep your eyes peeled at all times – a leisurely turtle might just happen to swim by,” says Devon.
Take a horse ride along the beach
Picture the scene – the sun is setting as you wade through the calm breaking waves of the Caribbean Sea on horseback. While this might seem like an idyllic and relaxing setting, on the island of Nevis the sense of adventure can quickly be turned up a notch. With one click of your heels, you could find yourself galloping across Nevis’ many riding tracks along the hillside, with the wind in your hair.
“Sunset is my favourite time to ride on horseback in Nevis,” says Devon. “The scenes are picturesque, the island is quiet, and you can enjoy the cooler air as you watch the sun slowly disappear across the horizon.”
