EXTENDING THE USE OF YOUR PATIO THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

by Staff GBAF Publications Ltd

Extending the use of your patio throughout the year is easier than it sounds, with the addition of a few simple accessories and staple pieces you can completely transform your space to suit any season. Simon Hudson, Managing Director at Oxley’s Furniture, British designers and manufacturers of luxury outdoor furniture, explains how best to prolong the use of your garden.

With many of us spending more time at home than ever before, it has become increasingly important to refresh and rejuvenate our spaces throughout the year. This is not only true for the interior of a home, but for exterior space too, with gardens becoming valued extensions of our homes for year-round living.

  • Consider your furniture

A patio is often the focal point of your garden so ensuring that it is both attractive and practical is really important for the overall look of the space. Before choosing a furniture set for your patio, make sure you consider the longevity. Opting for a non-wearing material, such as aluminium, will prevent rust and deterioration, compared to steel and plastic, which over time, are degraded by the elements. This means that you can use your furniture long into the cooler months with no need to cover it or put it away and it will look just as good when the summer comes back around.

  • Think about materials

We are accustomed to sudden weather changes in the UK, so considering the materials of not only the furniture themselves, but for the cushions you place on top of them, is hugely important. Finding stain and weather repellent cushions is best for outdoor seating, as they will protect against any spillages that come with outdoor entertaining, as well as rain showers. I would also recommend opting for cushions that are UV light resistant, to ensure they don’t discolour in direct sunlight.

  • Switch up your accessories

A simple way to ensure your outdoor seating area looks fresh and stylish all year-round is to invest in a range of scatter cushions that can be switched up depending on the season or what’s in bloom at that time. This can have a transformative effect on your patio area and is easier and more cost-effective than investing in new furniture.

  • Protect against showers

Sails provide a great way to both enhance the look of your garden and protect you from the sun in the summer months. They also double-up as a handy shelter to shield you from unexpected showers in the spring and autumn, making them a great addition to any garden.

  • Keep it cosy

A drop in temperature should not be a reason to stop using the space. Adding a firepit or heat lamp will provide shielding from the elements and ensure that you can enjoy the space you have created, whatever the weather. Plus, they will be effective in making your garden look instantly cosy as the light fades.

  • Remember lighting

In these cooler months as the evenings begins to draw in earlier, lighting will be important too.  As well as illuminating your garden, carefully selected lighting can also have a huge impact on the overall feel of a space. For example, opting for festoon lighting will add a festive touch to your patio area, whilst soft lamps in a dining area can create a cosy atmosphere.

  • Create space you love

Finally, the most important way to extend the use of your garden is to create an environment that you want to spend time in. Simply adding pots and containers to your patio where you can grow seasonal plants and care for them year-round will encourage you to get outside, even during the cooler months.

Making small, subtle changes to your outside space can make all the difference when it comes to extending the use of your garden throughout the year. Ensuring you choose the right furniture, practical accessories and seasonal décor will mean that your patio is well prepared for any event.
