With the news that Princess Eugenie, husband Jack Brooksbank and their son will be splitting their time between Portugal and the UK, all eyes are on this Iberian nation and its appeals. The latest 2022 data from Numbeo has indeed revealed that Portugal is safer, less polluted and more affordable than the UK. For overall quality of life, Portugal ranked 15th in the world, ahead of the UK in 17th

In safety terms, Portugal was well ahead of the UK, with the countries ranking 16th and 36th respectively. Numbeo’s pollution index, meanwhile, saw Portugal ranked as the 13th least polluted country on the planet. The UK’s pollution levels saw it take 20th place. Portugal is also less crowded than the UK, with 110 people per km2, compared to the UK’s 282, according to World Population Review.

“Portugal has so much to offer that it makes a superb choice for families as a place to live full or indeed some of the time. The climate and abundance of greenspace are ideally suited to an outdoor lifestyle, particularly in the Algarve, which enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year. And the pace of life has so much to offer in terms of mental health and wellbeing benefits. There are so many factors that contribute to the superior quality of life here.”

At Palmares Ocean Living & Golf, located in a natural amphitheatre overlooking the sparkling waters of the Alvor estuary in the Western Algarve, homeowners can enjoy the very best of the Portuguese lifestyle. The resort has been built to forge an exceptional harmony with the natural landscape, with a construction density of just 5.7%. The combination of ocean and golf landscapes delivers a sense of oneness with the natural world, for the ideal escape.

“Nature and sustainability are playing an increasingly important role in buyers’ choices, with proximity to the ocean a key element as well as a low-density environment yet still an easy reach to urban areas, amenities and transport links.”

The facilities at Palmares Ocean Living & Golf have been designed to provide everything that owners could wish for. The 27-hole golf course was designed by renowned American architect Robert Trent Jones Jr and annual membership for two is included with the purchase of every home. There’s a brand new, spectacular Clubhouse, designed by Pritzker Award-winning RCR Arquitectes, and the new Al Sud fine-dining restaurant, with Michelin-starred Executive Chef Louis Anjos in residence, which has been fully booked since it opened in June 2021.

Those looking for a year-round beach resort property at Palmares have a range of options available to them. Signature apartments are available priced from €600,000. Land plots with preliminary architectural studies are also available, priced from €1.15 million.

“Portugal’s strong ranking for quality of life says it all. This is an idyllic location in which to live. The scenery and the sunshine support healthy living, while characterful lively towns such as Lagos – a 10-minute drive from Palmares – provide everything you could wish for in terms of shops, restaurants, culture and leisure facilities. Portugal’s ranking is certainly well-deserved.”
